Carole Mattis
Director of Standards, Audits, Accreditation; Department of Corrections


Carole A. Mattis is the Director of the Bureau of Standards, Audits and Accreditation. Carole is charged with the direct oversight of the PREA Compliance Division, Office of County Inspections and Services, and the Division of Standards, Policy and Operational Compliance. Carole previously served as a staff assistant to Executive Deputy Secretary Shirley Moore Smeal. In 2014, Carole became a Department of Justice Certified PREA Auditor while working closely with the field to ensure the Department succeeded in attaining full compliance the first audit cycle, which was achieved. Carole was Supervisor in the Central Region Office of Special Investigations and Intelligence, the internal affairs and police arm of the DOC. Carole began her law enforcement career in 1994 as a Special Agent in the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Carole’s educational background includes a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University. She was a certified polygraphist and trained by the Pennsylvania State Police in Class A Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance.
