In 1963, The M. S. Hershey Foundation offered $50 million to The Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school and teaching hospital in Hershey. With this grant and $21.3 million from the U.S. Public Health Service, the University built a medical school, teaching hospital, and research center. Ground was broken in 1966, and Penn State's College of Medicine opened its doors to the first class of students in 1967 and accepted its first patients in 1970. The original buildings at Penn State Hershey Medical Center included the Medical Science Building and medical center, Animal Research Farm, Laundry and Steam Plant, and University Manor Apartments. Since 1970, the campus has grown from 318 to 550 acres. Today, Penn State Hershey Medical Center has completed several carefully planned construction projects. Additions were made to reflect a steady increase in patient demand for services and to expand research and teaching programs.

Michele Angello, Ph.D. works with gender-variant and transgender youth and adults. She offers individual, group and family therapy, as well as corporate education and training on a variety of issues of sexuality and has presented internationally on her work with transgender youth and working with children of transitioning parents. She facilitates several monthly support groups for transgender adults, youth and parents. Dr. Angello is often called on to speak as an expert on transgender youth issues to universities, corporations and the media. She has appeared on Larry King Live, the Tyra Banks Show, and various documentaries on transgender issues. She also developed the first graduate course in the U.S. that focused on clinical issues in transgender communities.

Through advocacy, education, and litigation, our attorneys, advocates, and volunteers work to preserve and promote civil liberties and equal treatment under the law.

Dr. James Thomas is a laryngologist, an ENT doctor or otolaryngologist, who has limited his practice for many years to voice disorders. He trained in Pennsylvania at Penn State University and Hershey Medical Center, followed by Southern Illinois University, and ultimately a fellowship in voice at Loyola University in Chicago. He practices laryngology in Portland, Oregon. For patients, Portland is a wonderful city to visit and procedures are performed at the state of the art, Wilshire Surgical Center. He has been involved with vocal pitch change for over 20 years. As a surgical specialist of the voice, he has performed several procedures to raise or lower pitch and has developed the Feminization Laryngoplasty (FemLar) as a procedure to permanently increase pitch and raise resonance.

Trans Advocacy Pennsylvania is a duly created, federally recognized, non-profit corporation and we are the first exclusively transgender action organization to be formed in Pennsylvania.
We envision a society where all persons without regard for their gender identity or expression, sexual orientation or preference, physical or mental disability, country of origin, level of or lack of melanin, education, economic status, faith or lack thereof, or any method of marginalization can enjoy the full citizenship as guaranteed by the Constitution.
Our Mission:
Conduct transgender informational related research or assist other agencies in their research efforts.
Advocate on behalf of transgender and LGBTQ identified persons at the local, Commonwealth and national level.
Conduct gender education to schools, businesses, health care providers, agencies and organizations, state and local government agencies (including Correctional Facilities), civic organizations and communities of faith.
Provide support to LGBTQ individuals and organizations, and provide access to various resources of value to the LGBTQ community.

The purpose of the Commission is to gather information regarding LGBTQ Pennsylvanians’ experiences and needs; review, evaluate, and assess programs affecting them; provide the Governor with information and recommendations regarding how best to meet their needs; and provide information about programs and services that may be relevant to LGBTQ Pennsylvanians’ needs. The Commission and its Executive Director also serve as an extension of the Governor’s office in their respective communities and are responsible for communicating the priorities and accomplishments of the Governor and his Administration. Jewelry Making is My Life I have been making Jewelry since the tender age of 11. And that was nearly 50 years ago ( hard to believe ). My Parents tell me it was actually earlier than that.....when at age 3 my favorite toy was little plastic "Pop Beads". They said I would sit quietly for hours, putting them together, coming up with color combinations and designs, then taking them apart. From there, I made seed bead jewelry for myself and my dolls. I knew at a very young age that this is what I wanted to forever. After all these years, I am still very passionate about my work, My designs are constantly evolving and changing. And I feel extremely grateful that I have been able to make my living exclusively with my Jewelry all of my life.
